Our final day saw us starting the day in Fort William, and ending it at Glasgow Airport, and in the middle an afternoon on Skye. Hardly the most sensible route plan, and indeed was a bit of a compromise after plans had to be altered. Today I was driving, thanks to my client owning a company car and his ability to give permission to anyone else to drive it.
En-route we stopped briefly at the Commando Memorial, Dornie Castle, and for a quick walk around Kyle of Lochalsh before heading over the bridge to Skye. I've only visited Kyle once before, some 24 years ago, and back then the only way to get over was via a ferry.
You can probably spend a whole week on Skye and still not have enough time, so an afternoon clearly wasn't long enough. We decided to pick one bit (really just one road) to do at a more relaxed pace. As it turns out, the road to Elgol was an inspired choice as along its whole 15 mile length we were treated to stunning landscapes, a mostly empty road, and at the end of the road in Elgol village, my favourite location of the whole trip.
Elgol has a rocky beach, big rocks, small rocks, most smoothed by the angry sea waters. It's a place that I already feel the need to return to.
The latter part of the day left us with a long journey after catching the last boat from Armadale to Mallaig (just 3 other vehicles made the 7pm crossing with us).
The journey of 140 miles, back through Glencoe, and along the shores of Loch Lommand was a really rather fantastic drive. With a mostly clear road ahead, the drive was probably the best drive I've ever had the pleasure of making, and despite it taking nearly 3 hours, I arrived at my airport hotel really rather refreshed and already thinking about making a return trip to the Highlands.
